2012 Vauxhall Astra VXR

Vauxhall's turbocharged Astra VXR, which goes on sale in 2012, has turbo power and a chassis honed at the Nürburgring by renowned saloon car racer and Le Mans winner Jo Winkelhock.

"We have devised a great package that will convince even the most experienced and enthusiastic drivers – and not just on the Nürburgring!" said Winkelhock.

The VXR is based on the recently-launched Astra GTC's platform and is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine with 276bhp and 400Nm. Its top speed is 155mph.

A specially developed mechanical limited slip differential is fitted to the VXR, and is said to provide "exceptional lateral grip and traction" in bends.

Further chassis changes include brakes developed by competition supplier Brembo, and standard fitment of Vauxhall's FlexRide adaptive damping system which has Sport and VXR modes for more focused damper, throttle and steering control.

Visual identifiers for the Astra GTC comprise a set of specially sculpted front and rear bumpers, side skirts, a roof spoiler and twin trapezoidal exhaust tail pipes. The VXR's cabin gets bespoke performance seats with embossed logos in the backs, a flat-bottomed VXR steering wheel and upgraded instruments.

The UK is expected to be by far the Astra VXR's biggest market in Europe. Pricing and on-sale dates will be revealed early next year.
