Hybrid cars have two forms of propulsion – usually a petrol engine and an electric motor.
Adding an electric motor/generator (the same device does both jobs) to a petrol powered car can allow a hybrid to run in electric-only mode at low speeds in town. A petrol-electric hybrid can also take advantage of regenerative braking to charge up its batteries, saving fuel.
