The J-gate was Jaguar's unique automatic transmission selector.

The idea of the J-gate was to provide the normal automatic transmission controls – the P, R, N and D positions – on the long side of the gate, but also provide easy access to the gear hold positions, which were situated on the short side of the gate.

The J-gate was nicknamed the 'Randle handle' after Jaguar technical director Jim Randle.

Though the idea worked well it was overtaken by the introduction of gearshift paddles and the rotary gear selector used on the XF and XJ models.
