The Drag Reduction System or DRS was introduced into Formula 1 in 2011 to promote overtaking.

The system allows the driver to reduce the angle of attack of an element in the rear wing, reducing downforce but also reducing drag. This allows the car to reach a higher top speed.

When DRS is in operation a characteristic slot can be seen in the rear wing (above).

F1 regulations only allow DRS to be deployed when a car is within one second of the car ahead, and within a defined section of track.
