A gas turbine is a type of rotary engine which burns fuel continously, rather than in a repeating cycle. Jet engines in aircraft are the best known type, but power can also be taken from a gas turbine by shaft and in this form the engine can power a land or sea vehicle.

The Rover car company was involved in early gas turbine development with Frank Whittle, and in the 1950s and 1960s the company experiemented with gas turbine cars (above). More recently, Jaguar's 2011 C-X75 concept uses small gas turbines in a hybrid drive system.
