Locked differential

A locked differential does not allow a speed difference to occur between a pair of driving wheels.

On a dry road this causes tyre scrub and handling problems.

Off road, in low-grip conditions, a locked differential can improve traction. Off-road vehicles are sometimes fitted with locking diffs to improve their off-road ability.
